About Plot45
Made by a teacher, for science classrooms
Plot45 is a set of simple online tools that takes a school science experiment from first sketch to marked report. It was built in a classroom, for the people who work in one.
What Plot45 is
Plot45 is a suite of simple, connected tools for school science. Students draw their experiment, record their measurements, plot graphs that treat uncertainty as real physics, and write up the report. Teachers set the work, keep a class together, and mark it. Everything runs in a web browser, so there is nothing to download or install.
The plotting tools are free for anyone. A free account adds the Sketch and Write apps and a small cloud space to save your work. Teachers who want classes, assignments and marking use the paid Teacher plan.
Why it was made
I have taught IB Physics for over a decade. In that time, the hardest part of practical work was rarely the science. It was everything around it. Students worked across different apps, on different devices, with different versions of Office, and putting a lab report together turned into a mess that pulled attention away from the physics. I would spend lesson time showing students how to build a cover page, add error bars, or drag a line on a graph to change its slope, when what I wanted to teach was the experiment itself.
High school time is short, and practical work matters too much to lose to fiddly software. I wanted one clear path: students understand a practical, draft their ideas and send them to me, I give feedback, they run the experiment, and I can see their data at every step. That last part matters more than it sounds. Normally, between the lab and the final hand-in, a student's data sits on their laptop and I am left hoping they have enough of it, and that it is right. Plot45 gives me eyes on the whole process, so I can support and scaffold the work while it is happening, not after.
The idea arrived while I was showing a class how to plot data in Excel. Watching them hunt through side panels for the one setting they needed, I felt for them. High school is stressful enough, and it does not have to be this complicated. Good design can lift a weight off students and open the door to real science. So I built the tool I wished my students had.
Who it's for
Plot45 is built for the way senior-school science is taught and assessed, where honest data, clear graphs and proper uncertainty carry real marks. It fits IB Diploma and A-Level science especially closely, and works just as well for GCSE, middle-school science, and first-year university labs. If your students take measurements and write them up, Plot45 is for them.
What we believe
Good tools should never get in the way of learning. The parts a student needs to do an honest write-up are free, and will stay free. What schools pay for is the classroom around the work: setting assignments, keeping classes organised, and marking. We never charge for getting the science right.
